New television platform improves patient experience at St. Antonius Hospital

Smart and user-friendly

A hospital is an environment where the patient should feel as comfortable as possible. For patients, a stay is already stressful enough. It is therefore reassuring when the technology around them simply works. St. Antonius Hospital in Utrecht was looking for a solution that would make this possible: one platform that allows patients to easily arrange everything without any hassle.

The challenge

St. Antonius Hospital in Utrecht is a top clinical hospital with more than five hundred beds. The top clinical hospital wanted to improve the patient experience with a smart, integrated TV system.

The requirement was clear: patients and visitors of all ages should be able to arrange everything at the touch of a button. Think of watching television, checking visiting hours, viewing medication times and scheduling appointments with doctors. The system had to work reliably day and night and be scalable for future applications.

“When you are in a hospital, you expect the television system to work at the touch of a button.” Wenny Braam Project Manager Facility Concepts & Innovation at St. Antonius Hospital

The solution

AVEX brought the right parties together. Together with CareScreen – a software developer focused on supporting healthcare processes and patient experience – and LG, as the manufacturer of Smart TVs, an integrated solution was developed.

The team chose LG Smart TVs that are suitable for 24/7 use. CareScreen expanded the platform with specific hospital applications. Hardware and software are fully aligned with each other.

First, a pilot was carried out. The project team extensively tested the solution for user-friendliness, navigation and whether the platform aligned with the processes within the hospital. After positive results, the solution was rolled out on a larger scale.

The result

Hundreds of LG Smart TVs are now installed in the hospital in Utrecht. Patients control both the platform and the television with a single remote control.

“The advantage of this LG solution is that it is a Smart TV that combines various functionalities and makes them quickly and easily accessible to our patients,” says Wenny Braam.

AVEX’s role

AVEX was responsible for the 3D design, programming and implementation of the audiovisual system for the council chambers and meeting rooms. The integration with the existing RIS and webcast environment was also realised. In addition, AVEX provided the training.

The AVEX project manager handled the full project management, including coordination with third parties to integrate the audiovisual equipment with building-related installations, furniture or fixed fittings.
