A new secure courtroom within PI Vught, enabling certain criminal cases to be heard safely within the facility.
Success Story
New secure courtroom at PI Vught
Court proceedings within the secure environment of PI Vught
A new courtroom has opened at PI Vught prison. This courtroom makes it possible for certain criminal cases to be heard within the secure perimeter of the facility. This reduces the number of high-risk transfers of prisoners considered an extreme escape risk.
At the same time, public access to court proceedings is maintained, with the press and members of the public able to follow hearings via a secure video link.
The challenge
Reducing high-risk prisoner transfers
Transporting prisoners from the Extra Secure Institution (EBI) requires extensive security measures and significant staffing. Every transfer involves risks.
There was therefore a need to enable certain court proceedings to take place safely and securely within PI Vught itself. At the same time, public access to court proceedings had to be maintained.
“Every time we have to transport a prisoner from the EBI, it involves risks. By enabling hearings to take place here, we reduce those risks and directly contribute to the safety of society.” Wim Saris Director-General, Custodial Institutions Agency (DJI)
The solution
A secure courtroom with access for the press and public
The new courtroom allows certain criminal cases to be heard within the secure environment of PI Vught. The courtroom accommodates up to eight members of the press, while other journalists and members of the public can follow proceedings via a video link.
This ensures that court proceedings remain accessible without compromising security. The new courtroom is the result of close collaboration between DJI and various partners across the justice system.
