Success Story

Digital justice at Amsterdam District Court

Audio and video as an essential part of modern justice.

The Dutch judiciary is becoming increasingly digital. Paper case files are being replaced by digital documents, while audio and video play an increasingly important role during court proceedings.

AVEX supported this development at several locations in Amsterdam. At the high-security courthouse in Osdorp, an existing courtroom was fully equipped for digital proceedings. For the new Amsterdam District Court in the Zuidas business district, AVEX subsequently delivered the audiovisual systems for digital courtrooms, hearing rooms and interview rooms.

Audiovisual technology is therefore becoming an integral part of the judiciary’s core processes.

The challenge

Making digital justice secure, accessible and easy to use

Digitalisation is changing the way court proceedings are conducted.

Digital case files need to be displayed easily during hearings. Judges, court clerks, public prosecutors, lawyers and defendants all need to be able to clearly see, hear and use audiovisual content. At the same time, the systems must meet strict requirements for security, speech intelligibility and reliability.

Accessibility also plays an important role. During large or sensitive cases, the press and public need to be able to follow proceedings even when attending the same courtroom is not possible or appropriate.

The technology needs to support all of these requirements without adding unnecessary complexity for users.

The solution

Digital courtrooms where audio, video and control come together

AVEX delivered audiovisual solutions at several locations to support digital court proceedings.

At the high-security courthouse in Osdorp, computer displays were integrated into the desks used by judges, prosecutors, lawyers and defendants. The courtroom was also equipped with an upgraded network of microphones and loudspeakers, additional displays and secure control positions from which the systems can be managed.

For the new Amsterdam District Court, AVEX delivered the audiovisual systems for 30 courtrooms, 20 hearing rooms and several interview rooms.

Every courtroom was equipped with presentation displays, allowing information from digital case files to be easily presented during proceedings. AVEX also implemented connections between courtrooms, allowing additional rooms to be linked to the courtroom where proceedings are taking place.

Dedicated press connections also allow members of the media to follow proceedings remotely when required.

Digital Courtrooms

Audiovisual systems for courtrooms, hearing rooms and interview rooms support secure and efficient court proceedings.

Presenting & Collaborating

Presentation displays, integrated screens in courtroom desks and connections between courtrooms make it easy to share digital case files and presentations.

Press & Secure Video Connections

Dedicated press connections, additional displays for the public and media, and secure video distribution between court locations.

Audio & Central Control

Professional audio, intuitive touch panels, Crestron control and secure control positions provide straightforward operation and excellent speech intelligibility.

The result

A future-ready environment for digital justice

The audiovisual solutions support the Dutch judiciary as its working processes become increasingly digital.

Judges and other parties involved in proceedings can easily display and discuss information from digital case files. Professional audio ensures that speech remains clear and intelligible, while connections between courtrooms make proceedings accessible to larger audiences when required.

Ease of use was also a key consideration. Using touch panels with pre-programmed functions, court staff can display content, control microphones and activate recording functions.

In this way, complex audiovisual technology is transformed into an intuitive environment that allows users to concentrate on the legal proceedings.
